French Park officials visit Augusta Canal NHA
Activities included a two-hour canoe paddle down Augusta Canal and visit to the Canal's Interpretive Center. The group also explored other regional parks and landmarks, attended an Augusta City Commission meeting and were formally recognized by Augusta's mayor. The delegation's itinerary also included a day trip to the nearby South Carolina National Heritage Corridor's Edgefield Discovery Center.
The Regional Natural Park of Reims Mountain is located in the Champagne district in France, south of the city of Reims, approximately 80 miles northeast of Paris. The delegation was led by Dominique Leveque, chairman of the PNR board, mayor of the city of Ay and chairman of the Federation of French Regional Natural Parks. Other members are Sylviane Jonet, Director of the Park; Jean-Paul Angers, Conseiller regional (similar to a State Legislator ); and Pierre Cheval, member of the PNR board and chairman of the Champagne Regional Marketing Institute of France.
The goal of the partnership program is to develop exchange relationships between park and heritage area staff and leadership in order to learn from each other and advance the missions of their respective organizations. Augusta Canal's partnership is the first to be formed between the 40 United States National Heritage Areas and the 45 Regional Natural Parks of France.
Canal Claims Top Spots in Reader Polls
Readers and writers have bestowed several recognitions on the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area in 2008.
The canal earned four top spots in Augusta Magazine's annual "Best of Augusta" readers survey: Best place to ride a bike; Best Place to get back to nature; Best Place to walk your dog and Best kept recreational secret.
The Metro Spirit's readers chose the canal as the metro area's best outdoor activity in their Best of Summer poll. And although the title is just a touch gruesome, Georgia Magazine named Augusta Canal boat tours to its list of "Fifty things to do in Georgia before you die" in the magazine's September issue. The canal also has been featured in several regional and national publications including Georgia Trend and Partners magazine, a publication of the Alliance of National Heritage Areas. |
