Canal
Third Level poised for progress
Special Task Force completes concepts for redevelopment
Charrette
Report: Strategic Concepts and Recommendations for Augusta Third
Level Canal, Laney-Walker Neighborhood - Available Online.
This is a 12MB, 40 page pdf file.
The recently reclaimed third level of Augusta
Canal that winds through lower downtown Augusta and into the Laney-Walker
neighborhood was the focus of an intensive planning exercise in Spring
2006. Led by MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, a broad-based community
task force developed a strategic concept document to guide redevelopment
in this once-neglected area. The plan calls for parks to be built or improved
with multi-use pedestrian and bike trails, streets and entryway enhancements,
neighborhood housing revitalization and adaptive reuse of vintage structures
on or near the canal.

Canal Exhibits win National, Local Recognitions
The Augusta Canal Authority received the Award of Merit from the American
Association for State and Local History (AASLH) for its Augusta Canal
Interpretive Center. The Association presented the award to Canal Authority
Executive Director Dayton Sherrouse at their national annual meeting in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The only winner from the state of Georgia, the Augusta Canal Interpretive
Center is one of 14
Award of Merit recipients in 60th annual AASLH competition. The award
recognizes excellence
in the collection, preservation and interpretation of state and local
history throughout America.
Locally, the readers of Augusta Magazine chose Augusta Canal as the area’s
Best Tourist Attraction in the annual “Best of Augusta” poll, unseating
long-time favorites Fort Discovery and the Riverwalk
